Renewed interest in the intersection of paleogeography and historical biogeography in recent years has prompted us to propose a workshop that will be held in conjunction with the 18th Caribbean Geological Conference. The central purpose of the workshop is to get a number of specialists together to debate questions related to the origin of the present-day Caribbean biotas, with special reference to those of the Greater Antilles. For example, there are a number of current hypotheses that seek to explain the propagation, colonization, evolution, distribution and extinction of Cenozoic terrestrial and marine organisms in the Caribbean realm. During the workshop these hypotheses will be critically examined from several standpoints, including those based on phylogeographical and paleogeographical interpretation of biological and geological evidence. Papers dealing with any aspect of Caribbean paleogeography, paleontology and biogeography of extant and extinct organisms are welcome.
