Dear colleagues:

FINAL CONTRIBUTION OF IGCP Project 433
As our project ends in the year 2004, we have an obligation with UNESCO/IUGS to produce a Final Volume covering mainly the achievements of the project. We would like to suggest that potential contributors start planning and even preparing papers dealing with the following four subjects. Please choose the Part(s) to which you would like to make a contribution, and let us know. The title of your paper is your choice.

IGCP Project 433: Caribbean Plate Tectonics: Origin and evolution of the Region. Final contribution:

Preliminary Title: Caribbean Plate Tectonics: a Step Forward

First Part:
Origin and Evolution of the Caribbean: The evolution of the ideas and models.
Papers to be included in this section will be concerned with evaluating the history of Caribbean interpretation from Geosynclinal to Plate Tectonics theories.

Second Part:
The conflicts among data sets and their interpretation, with present-day models.
Here can be accommodated papers presenting new data and its consequences to the present understanding of the origin and evolution of local areas and its implications for the "big picture". These papers can be grouped by subject or by method such as tomography, paleomagnetics, geochemistry, petrology, chronology, stratigraphy, paleontology, structural geology, etc.

Third Part:
Caribbean Origin and Evolution: Tectonic Modeling of the region.
Papers can be included here that present models for the evolution of the entire Caribbean including Central America, or papers which present models for the interpretation of some local areas.

Fourth Part:
Caribbean Plate Tectonics: The Present Debate and Roads into the Future.
Having the authors’ agreement, the editors will provide copies of all the papers to all the first contributors to the volume. Every author will be asked to write a discussion of his views on the whole volume and/or each paper. The editors will compile this information and send copies to all authors, so they will have a chance to adjust their manuscript, as they deem appropriate. In this way, we hope to keep the original soul of the Project alive in which "debate and discussion" remains a major goal and a major achievement. Later, as a debate section, the editors will summarize this chapter, with references to the source of every opinion in the debate.
