Computing Information

The Institute for Geophysics maintains a networked system of Sun, PC and Apple Macintosh computers and assorted peripherals, including printers, plotters, disk drives, tape drives, CD ROM drives, digitizing boards, scanners and more. These are put to work in tasks ranging from routine word processing to advanced color graphics to 3D modeling and inversion. Some of the people who routinely answer computing questions have put together a list of answers to Frequently Asked Questions. It includes a specific FAQ on Graphics Solutions, on Web Publishing, and a guide to one of the more popular software packages, GMT. Need help with UNIX commands? Try searching the web via Yahoo. One could page is: http://www.canberra.edu.au/~sam/whp/unix-cmd.html. If you can't find this page, contact Lisa.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

UTIG has 3 systems analysts: Mark, Kevin and John. When it is necessary to contact someone about a problem use the following contact methods, in decreasing order of preference:

Preferred:
e-mail to "gripe" - not time critical (here's a problem/suggestion)
e-mail to "help" - time critical (I can't work until it's fixed)

Less Preferred:
Telephone call - very critical (e.g., e-mail's broken/network's down)

Least Preferred:
Coming to the office - just can't wait (expect to be turned down).

By asking you to adhere to the above policy, we hope to be more efficient in solving day-to-day problems and make progress on other issues that we have been unable to address. It is important that your problems do get solved in a timely fashion. Consequently, if you feel that you do not get a working answer in a timely fashion, please document the problem, submission date, and response (or lack thereof) by sending an email to Palmer who will log these for review purposes.
