Recent Advances in Caribbean and Latin America Neotectonics, Paleoseismology and Seismic Hazards

Special session at the Seismological Society of America annual meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, 30 April-2 May 2003

We would like to draw your attention to a Special Session scheduled for the 2003 SSA Meeting. The session is "Recent Advances in Caribbean and Latin America Neotectonics, Paleoseismology and Seismic Hazards". The deadline for abstracts is 24 January 2003. Online submission of abstracts is available now at: http://www2.seismosoc.org/absub_03/ More meeting information, including lodging information, is available at: http://civil.uprm.edu/.

Session Description
This session highlights recent research results on active fault studies in the Caribbean/Latin America region. The session will focus on seismological, geodetic, geological (Quaternary mapping), geophysical, geomorphological and paleoseismology investigations that collectively are transforming our understanding of the tectonics and seismic hazards of the region.

A two day field trip following the meeting led by Carol Prentice (USGS), Paul Mann (UTIG) and others will examine neotectonic features of western Puerto Rico including tectonically-controlled landforms, trench exposures of Holocene faults, and prehistoric and historic liquefaction features exposed in alluvium.
