CATACLYSMS AND CATASTROPHES -
THE ROLE OF SCIENCE
IN NATURAL AND HUMAN-INDUCED DISASTERS

Download Classroom Modules

(Our Catastrophes and Cataclysms project is linked to our GK-12 Program)

Purpose: Create inquiry-based learning activities through a partnership involving K-12 teachers, graduate students and research scientists at the Institute for Geophysics and the Bureau of Economic Geology. The activities provide opportunities for teachers to use technology in science learning.

Activities:
1. Develop and field test new curricular materials to help teachers to effectively incorporate geoscience into the teaching of physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology.

2. Design activities to expand teachers’ familiarity with LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging), drilling, seismographs, seismic reflection and refraction technologies, geophysical logging, sampling, measurement, and informational technology.

3. Align activities with TEKS (for physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, GMO, and other Texas high school science courses as appropriate), NSES, AAAS Benchmarks.

4. Follow the TEXTEAMS template to facilitate adoption by TEA and Dana Center.

Anticipated Outcomes:
The project will serve as a useful model for similar programs throughout the country, especially those linked to the science of two new major Earth science initiatives: EarthScope and the Integrated Ocean Drilling program.

Partners:
UTIG, BEG, 4empowerment, and the Liberal Arts and Science Academy at LBJ High School in Austin.
