Seismology is the study of earthquakes and of the solid Earth using seismic waves generated by earthquakes and large explosions. Earthquakes not only offer opportunities to study earthquake processes; they allow us to study the structure, composition, and dynamic processes of the entire Earth. UTIG currently maintains the Hockley seismographic station and is in the process of building a network of seismic recording stations across Texas (TexSeis). By using a combination of computer-based tutorials and guided exercises, the participants in this workshop will learn about the basic structure of the Earth and how seismic waves propagate through the Earth. Another web-based tutorial will lead them through several key elements of seismic analysis such as finding the approximate location of an earthquake. They will then apply and extend their knowledge by analyzing actual seismograms recorded at the Hockley station maintained by UT Institute for Geophysics (UTIG). Concept Strand
