Introduction

Antarctica is the world's largest research area,  established in 1959 by the International Antarctic Treaty, which is signed by 12 nations.

There are no native villages or towns in or near Antarctia. The two closest countries to Antarctica are Chile and New Zealand, but  27 countries have research bases there.

Through this webquest you will learn more about the Antarctic, its geography, the research that is being conducted there, and how to use longitude and latidude to geo-reference Antarctic locations. The Google Earth overlay used in this activity was developed at the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics by Kevin Carver with assistance from Stephanie mills. Both are undergraduate student researchers at UT under supervision of Dr. Jack Holt. They are supported by an NSF "Research Experience for Undergraduates" supplement to NSF-OPP award 230197.
