SEISMOLOGY IN SCHOOLS PROJECT

Seismology stations in Texas

While earthquakes present dire hazards to human society, they also offer opportunities to study the composition and dynamic processes of the entire Earth. The Institute for Geophysics plans to establish a "Seismology in Schools" project though the GK-12 program and in conjunction with the Texas Regional Seismic (TexSeis) network. The long-term goal is link each station in the TexSeis network, including the Hockley seismographic station maintained by UTIG, to a nearby host school.

The project would engage students in the acquisition and manipulation of seismological data and is relevant to EarthScope, a new major NSF-sponsored initiative to study the structure and deformation of North America. Please contact Jay Pulliam for additional information.
