Health and Recreation Unit
You're responsibilities are
pretty simple, keep people healthy and happy. You also need to organize
how people will eat, sleep, clean themselves and play while in Antarctica.
Most importantly, you need to make sure that all of the necessary medical facilities
exist for people who might need them.
Medical Health
- Most major medical problems will
result in an evacuation of the person to the nearest facilities. If
the station is located on the Antarctic Peninsula then it may be a good
idea to set up ties to a hospital at the tip of South America.
- What do you think are the most common
medical illnesses down in Antarctica?
Personal Health
- Think about how much people will
want to shower and launder their clothes.
- You have to plan adequate kitchen
facilities with enough food storage to feed people who stay all winter.
Mental Health
- You need to plan recreation facilities
that are available to people both inside buildings and outside (if it's
not too cold).
- Think about how much personal space
each person wants. Remember that some people live in Antarctica for
up to 6 months.
- Don't forget that some people may
not enjoy team sports, and/or sports at all...they need recreation also.
