Habitat Support Unit
You are responsible for the
survival and operation of all of the buildings. Most importantly, this
includes making sure that each building is supplied with enough power and heat
to keep people (or goods) happy. You are also in charge of waste, water
supply and recycling. Remember that the Antarctic Treaty aims to keep
Antarctica the most cleanest continent in the world. Most waste is shipped
back either to a main station (as in the one you are building) or to the mother
country for processing. At remote stations all but human waste is transported
back to the main base.
Waste:
- You need to facilitate storage,
shipping and possibly recycling of all but human wastes (lets pretend for
now that humans don't have any waste!).
- Don't forget toilets!
Water:
- You need to figure out how to generate
fresh water. If you are by the ocean, can you use that water?
If you are further inland, how else can you generate enough water?
- How can you store and move water
from building to building without having it freeze? Would it be easier
to have a series of interconnecting buildings?
Energy:
- Remember to plan for power outages.
You need to have backup generators for backup generators! What would
be the plan of action in case of a huge storm that blew all of the generators?
- Where will you generate heat?
Will you have a central heating unit for all buildings or supply it to each
building individually?
