The application of paleomagnetic techniques to tectonic problems remains the main thrust of Wulf's research. Current field areas include Venezuela, Argentina, and Antarctica. The work in Antarctica, in cooperation with several members of the Institute as well as the Department, resulted in a new plate reconstruction for ~1.1 Ga.
Magnetostratigraphy is another aspect of Wulf's research. In 3 field seasons in central China, he collected over 3000 oriented samples over a 1500 meter interval in an attempt to date a rich vertebrate fauna. This work is currently in progress.
Paleomagnetic techniques have long been applied to archeological problems. His approach is tailored to the occurrence of stone-lined fire places, commonly found in Central Texas. The results have shed new light on the utilization of middens and earth ovens.
