About Dr. Partin
Dr. Partin is working closely with several faculty members at the University of Texas and the University of Guam to synergistically study an important climatic region: the Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP). His research focuses on reconstructing past hydrologic changes in the WPWP both spatially and temporally using cave stalagmites. Research sites include Northern Borneo, Guam, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and the Philippines. Stalagmite records from the WPWP address mean state climate changes as well as climate variability associated with ENSO. Absolute chronologies based on U-Th dates combined with proxy data, such as stable isotope and trace metal ratios, yield strong climate reconstructions. Additionally, a monitoring program set-up with the University of Guam will provide data about modern cave conditions in Guam in order to better interpret tropical stalagmite records.
