THE PARADISE where
I went to grad school
These three pictures of an active volcano
(Mauna Loa, Big Island, Hawaii) were taken by my close friend and fellow
graduate student Craig Fisher, who now works for the Office of Naval Research (ONR).
I did not study Volcanology at the University of Hawaii but when I was told
that a group of volcanologists were getting ready to visit Mauna Loa (in the
summer of 1984 when both Mauna Loa and Kiluea were erupting) , I managed to
join the group. An USGS helicopter dropped us near the vent - this was 'once in
a lifetime' experience!
MAUNA LOA - A
Bird's eye view
Craig made a poster size picture of this
which I used to hang proudly on the wall of my graduate student cubicle at HIG
- talk about ego boosting!
