Tom is a marine seismologist specializing in the application of seismic reflection methods to the study of convergent margin processes. In the late 1980's he lead a team of UTIG researchers pioneering the academic use of 3-D seismic techniques to image subduction zone processes with experiments offshore Costa Rica, the Barbados Trench and the Nankai Trough. These projects, and others, have been combined with ocean drilling experiments, which significantly improves our insights into the relationship between hydrologic and tectonic processes at convergent margins.

Tom is also responsible for creating UTIG's Marine Seismic Data Center, which makes the Institute's 30-year archive of marine seismic reflection data available online to the international marine geophysical community and industry. With NSF and NOAA support, the system has expanded to to include seismic data from all National Science Foundation sponsored seismic experiments. Access to the data center is through the Academic Seismic Portal at UTIG, which is part of the Marine Geoscience Data System providing access to data portals for a variety of marine geoscience data (MGDS)
