Plumbing 3-D Seismic Example Image

Three-dimensional volume display of the Barbados Accretionary Prism. The sub-horizontal fault (decollement) separates the Carribbean from the subductiong Atlantic (North American Plate). Modeling and logging density (red curves fro mODP Leg 156 and 171A) indicate that the purple-green-blue reflection response is from a thin layer of low density/seismic velocity maintained by high pressure fluids within the fault zone. The pink zones show the location of similar reflection waveforms in the overlying sediment volume. Speculation is that water is leaking from the decollement charging the sediments above. This leakage is most pronounced above regions of the decollement thought to be especially water rich ( the purple-blue regions). Figure and caption by Tom Shipley
