Note the asymmetric arching on both sides of the island arc and the Benioff zones from the North America and the Caribbean subducting plates. Darker gray area indicates the Puerto Rico-Virgin Islands carbonate platform, which is short and more faulted on the south side, and more extensive, but less faulted on the north side.
