EARTHQUAKE SEISMOLOGYCURRENT SEISMOGRAMS AND SEISMOGRAPH STATIONSUTIG scientists operate seismograph stations in Hockley, TX, and (in collaboration with colleagues at Texas Tech) in Junction, TX. Currently they are working to fund and install several more seismograph stations in Texas. This network, called TexSeis, would provide Texas with modern seismographic facilities that are comparable to those in other states having one or more large cities. At the TexSeis link, you will find a map showing the sites of current and planned seismograph stations in Texas. And, you can view actual seismograms recorded over the past ten days at several different stations, including Hockley and Junction. At the Hockley link, you can learn more about what goes on at a typical seismograph station. There is also a picture tour of the Hockley facility, which is 600 meters below the Earth's surface in a salt mine. Two websites, operated by the University of Washington and the United States Geological Survey, provide additional information about earthquakes. The USGS site provides useful information about recent events, while the UW "SeismoSurfing" site provides current links to numerous earthquake seismology organizations worldwide. |
