Multi-Channel Seismic on the Shackton Fracture Zone:
This is a basic graphic of how the streamer works. The streamer is a 1400 meter long cable which contains special microphones called hydrophones. The streamer is towed behind the ship and detects sound waves reflected off the crust layers. These sound waves are produced by air guns towed behind the ship.
Taking Sediment Cores in Bransfield Strait
This diagram represents the Kasten Corer. The corer is basically a long stainless steel tube with a heavy lead weight on one end. The corer is lowered straight down through the water. When the bottom comes in contact with the seafloor sediments, the weight on the top pushes the corer down into the sediments.
Searching for Hydrothermal VentsThe ZAPS Sled is a specially designed piece of equipment used by marine geochemists to locate hydrothermal vents, or "black smokers" on the ocean floor. The sled carries special detectors that sample the water for the presents of manganese and other trace minerals. The presence of these trace minerals is an indicator of the presence of these vents.
