Back to Comparison of Observed and Synthetic Waveforms for Seismic Event Location and Phase Association

Regional seismograms for events in different geographic regions often show little resemblance to one another; and, in some regions and distance ranges the P and S-Lg groups are not easily identified. (Top) Broadband vertical- and tangential-component records from station HKT (324 km; mbLg = 3.9) for the Alice, Texas earthquake of 24 March 1997 (Bilich et al., 1998). (Bottom) Records from station SOT (324 km; Mw = 5.0) for the California-Nevada earthquake of 22 November 1997. Note that the P and S groups are unclear in the Texas records, but that the surface wave group is high-energy and persistent. [reproduced from: Frohlich, C. and J. Pulliam. Single-station location of seismic events, Phys. Earth Planet. Int. (submitted, 1998).]
