A partial support toward the cost of Streckeisen STS-1 seismometer

Principal Investigator: Fumiko Tajima

Funded by: Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology

Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) provided a partial support for installing a fully configured set of Streckeisen STS-1 very broad-band seismometers as part of the global seismographic network (GSN). The station is configured with the data acquisition system (DA) which is located on the ground of a salt mine (owned by United Salt Corporation of Houston) 1500 ft below the surface in Hockley (station code HKT) about 100 miles east of Austin, and the data processing system (DP) at UTIG. Digitized waveform data are being transmitted to the surface via a fiber optics cable, then the transmission from DA to DP is being carried out via Satellite link. The entire system costs over $150K and additional funds were provided by U. S. Geological Survey, the University of Texas at Austin and several generous local donors. Station HKT is the very first broad-band station for the IRIS/GSN in Texas recording high quality seismic waveform data from local, regional and teleseismic events. A number of new scientific projects are expected to evolve using the unique data. Users worldwide can retrieve the waveform data through the IRIS Data Management Center as well as from the computer connected with the DP at UTIG through the internet.
