Back to SW Pacific GPS homepage.
The Southwest Pacific: This natural laboratory for active tectonics has the most rapid plate motions on earth and numerous earthquakes and volcanoes. Coral reefs record paleoseismic histories and the geographic distribution of extremely rapid vertical deformation. Measurements at each GPS site (filled black circles) determine distances to other GPS sites to within a few mm. Our GPS network allows us to measure contemporary plate motions and crustal deformation and provides insights into the processes that shape island arcs and generate large earthquakes. |
