Figure 3: Calculated profiles of temperature, layer thickness and age for sites E and G.  The dashed curve corresponds  to a history of constant accumulation and ice thickness throughout the LGM, a gradual cooling before the LGM, and a 10 degree warming after.  The solid line corresponds to the same temperature history, but a gradual 200 m thickening of ice before LGM and gradual thinning to present. A gradually decreasing accumulation rate before LGM followed by a rapid increase is assumed.  The pressure melting point, the depth and age of the 2 cm thick layers, and the depth of the 50 ka layer are shown in the plots.
