The data aquisition system for the Hockley seismograph is located in an
excavated chamber within the mine, approximately 470 meters below the surface.
The seismometer consists of three Streckeisen STS-1 sensors oriented
vertically, north-south, and east-west, placed on a concrete slab,
and kept in evacuated containers (i.e. bell jars).
The seismometers feed an analog signal directly to the data aquisition
computer, where it is digitized, filtered, and temporarily stored.
A fiber optic cable running up a bore hole connects the seismograph
to the VSAT
communications hardware, a Global Positioning System clock, and a
dial-up modem on the surface.
