1. Item: Articles of at least several pages length reporting the results of scientific research, published in recognized scientific journals.
Example:
Included (category='mainstream')
Justification: Such articles represent the main means of communication between scientists, and are thus the principal element of the CL.
2. Item: Articles or extended abstracts of at least several pages in length reporting the results of scientific research, and published in a book or conference proceedings.
Example:
Included (category='archival')
Justification: As in 1., these are a recognized, legitimate means to communicate scientific results.
3. Item: Maps, CD-ROMs, geologic cross sections, or other materials representing a comprehensive synthesis of scientific research, and which have been formally published and are freely available for public purchase.
Included (category='proceedings', i.e., 'proceedings, maps, or cross-sections')
Justification: As in 2. above, these are a recognized, legitimate means to communicate scientific results.
4. Item: News articles, book reviews, or commentary authored by UTIG staff and appearing in a recognized scientific periodical.
Example:
Included (category = 'comment', counted as 'other' in graphs and some tables)
Justification: While such items are not basic science they are often solicited from individuals with standing in the scientific community and they are worthy of inclusion in the CL. Note: To be included in the CL authorship must be specified explicitly in the published article; anonymous material does not qualify for the CL.
Example:
Not Included
Justification: This news article was submitted to Geotimes by J. A. Austin, but no authorship was specified in the published article.)
5. Item: News articles, etc., authored by UTIG staff and appearing in a newspaper or non-scientific periodical.
Not Included
Justification: The purpose of the CL is to provide a record of scientific contributions of UTIG staff and students.
6. Item: Letters to the editor, authored by UTIG staff and appearing in a journal or newspaper.
Not Included
Justification: These letters seldom represent a significant piece of scientific work, nor are they usually indicative of special standing in the scientific community.
7. Item: Brief published abstracts of papers presented at conferences
Example:
Not Included
Justification: Abstracts are not generally recognized as publications; when they represent significant scientific contributions this is published subsequently as a full-length article in a scientific journal.
8. Item: Special issues of journals or volumes of collected papers when UTIG staff is editor or coeditor but contributes no paper in collection.
Example:
Included (category = 'archival')
Justification: Editorships can represent a significant effort and bring recognition to UTIG; inclusion in the CL recognizes this.
9. Item: Special issues of journals or volumes of collected papers when UTIG staff is editor or coeditor and contributes a paper in collection.
Example:
Not Included
Justification: Editors often contribute one or more papers in such collections; thus their effort is already recognized in the CL (see #1114-1116).
10. Item: Technical reports, brochures, or other publications prepared and printed entirely under UTIG auspices
Example:
Not Included
Justification: UTIG maintains a separate list of technical reports, etc., which is more appropriate for these contributions, especially as the are rarely cited.
11. Item: Technical reports or other publications with listed UTIG coauthors that are prepared and printed at institutions other than UT.
Example:
Included (category = 'technical report', counted as archival in tables and graphs)
Justification: It is not appropriate to include these on the UTIG technical report list; inclusion in the CL recognizes their contribution appropriately.
12. Item: Scientific articles or chapters with listed UTIG coauthors which are part of technical reports or conference proceedings not produced at UTIG.
Example:
Included (category = 'proceedings')
Justification: Although seldom cited, when these are several pages in length or greater they represent significant effort that would not otherwise be recognized.
13. Item: Any item (such as an abstract) authored by MSI staff which appears in the current CL but which would not be included under one of the above guidelines.
Example:
Included (category = 'biology')
Justification: We have not removed MSI contributions both because there may be historical reasons for their inclusion, and because most of them are unavailable to us for examination.
14. Item: Any item which appears in the current CL for which we could not find complete publication information
Example:
Included (category = 'archival')
Justification: Complete information may become available in the future, and these articles can then be properly classified.
