Purpose
The purpose of this NSF-sponsored project is to organize seismic
reflection/refraction data into a modern relational database management system accessible
through the Internet. The system
is designed principally for academic scientific use. Users include scientists,
research staff and students from around the world that have high bandwidth
Internet access. The web site provides access to metadata, SEG-Y files, navigation files,
seismic profile images, processing histories and more. The main features of the web site include a
geographic search engine using Google Plugins, a metadata search
engine, and metadata pages for the various seismic programs.
Metadata are uploaded into mySQL, a public-domain SQL
server, and then PHP scripts query the metadata and directories,
creating web pages, displaying images, and providing ftp links.
Data Integrity
Because much of the data are legacy in nature, we make no
absolute claims to accuracy of the data identification, acquisition parameters,
processing methods, navigation, database entries or search methods. However, it
is our intention to be as accurate as possible.
Terms and Conditions
For inclusion in the DMS all metadata, including navigation
and small raster images must be freely accessible regardless of other
restrictions. Other basic requirements for inclusion: SEG-Y formats, navigation
and a correlation between seismic traces and navigation.
The web site contains public, access restricted and
proprietary data.
- Access restrictions placed by scientists contributing data are maintained until they approve release. These are principally governed by NSF data sharing policies.
- Access to proprietary data (from industry consortia, special gifts, etc.) is determined by the
contributing institution including negotiating terms, conditions and cost.
Data are provided with the express understanding that they will not be sold or given to third parties. Data are not provided for inclusion with other commercial databases or web sites without prior written approval.
