UTIG Excellence Fund, Fellowships and Endowments:

Choose Your Place to Make an Impact

The following funds support the research and educational mission of UTIG and donations of any amount are gratefully accepted to all. If you are interested in creating a new fund to help UTIG grow even more, please contact the Jackson School of Geosciences Development and Alumni Relations team at 512.471.1282 or visit our webpages.

  • The UTIG Excellence Fund provides unrestricted support to UTIG. This allows the Institute to respond quickly to opportunities that arise, to reward and encourage excellence and seed projects that will raise the prestige of UTIG. Funds are used at the discretion of the Director of the Institute, in consultation with the Dean of the Jackson School.

  • The Maurice Ewing and J. Lamar Worzel Graduate Student Fellowship Program in Geophysics supports graduate students at UTIG. The fellowship was established in honor of the late Maurice Ewing, renowned oceanographer and founder of the Institute for Geophysics, and the late J. Lamar Worzel, long-time colleague of Ewing, Director of the Marine Science Institute Geophysical Laboratory at Galveston from 1975 through 1979, and former president of the Palisades Geophysical Institute. It is a privilege to be the recipient of this educational tribute to Ewing and Worzel, both of whom made extraordinary pioneering contributions to solid earth and marine geophysics.

  • Palisades Geophysical Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship provides support to postdoctoral fellows within the Institute for Geophysics. The Director of the Institute, in consultation with scientists and staff, makes this award.

  • The Gale White Fellowship was established in 1999 from the estate of Gale White, a colleague of Drs. Ewing and Worzel to support graduate students. Click here to see a list of Ewing/Worzel and Gale White Fellowship recipients. To apply for a Ewing/Worzel or Gale White fellowship, e-mail the Fellowship Committee Chair, Dr. Gail Christeson.

  • The Arthur E. Maxwell Graduate Fellowship in Geophysics is designed to support the ongoing marine field course(s) in geophysics (for both undergraduates and graduate students) run by Institute for Geophysics staff Members. Funds shall be used for expenses associated with that/these marine field course(s) deemed appropriate by the staff members involved. This fellowship was created by UTIG Senior Scientist, James A. Austin to honor Dr. Maxwell, the inaugural Director of UTIG. During Art's tenure, 1982 through 1994, his efforts developed the Institute into one of the leading geology and geophysical research institutions in the world today.

  • The Quarles van Ufford UTIG Field Endowment was established by Stacey (nee Tyburski) MA '92 and Andrew PhD '96 Quarles. This gift supports graduate and undergraduate student field work performed through the Institute. To the extent permissible under the law and University policies, preference is to be shown to female students. Currently, the funds are being used by the MGG field experience.

  • Dedication, service, and compassion: These are the professional values representedy by Eleanor Picard's career. The Eleanor Picard Excellence Award was established to support an award that will honor the invaluable contributions that members of UTIG's support staff make to UTIG's scientific and educational mission.

Outright gifts received annually from Advanced Microdevices, BP, Gale White, Paradigm Geophysical Corporation, Schlumberger Technology Corporation, the Shell Oil Company Foundation, and the Vetlesen Foundation provide seed money for new initiatives, essential computational equipment and software, and support for graduate students and postdoctoral research scientists.
