A hearty welcome from the Director to all of our new students to the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics (UTIG), which is a part of the Jackson School of Geosciences. UTIG is a world leader in expeditionary-scale geophysical research, conducting research in four broad themes: climate, energy, marine geology and geophysics, and planetary and polar geophysics. You have joined an organization with a suite of researchers as colleagues, who are dedicated to the mission of understanding how worlds work.
Graduate school is one of the most rewarding times in one’s scientific career because it is the time to make the initial transition from learning to creating knowledge. This transition happens by leveraging knowledge learned in the classroom and field to solve some of the most outstanding geophysical questions of our time. Leaders in the field of geophysics will mentor you through your journey of discovery. Support staff at UTIG will support your research with technical and administrative expertise. Now is your time to excel and UTIG is the place.
I close this letter of welcome with a favorite quote of mine:
“You are capable of more than you know. Choose a goal that seems right for you and strive to be the best, however hard the path. Aim high. Behave honorably. Prepare to be alone at times, and to endure failure. Persist! The world needs all you can give.” — E.O. Wilson
